Tuesday 23 March 2010, 9.30 to 15.30, Maple House, Birmingham
Overview Our aim is to provide you with a greater understanding of why people travel, what alternatives exist and how you can introduce policy and behaviour changes that support sustainable travel. During the day we will: · Provide an overview of the core principles and values of travel management · Look at current booking systems and how travel is purchased to ensure the best policies and processes are in place to deliver best value and ease of use. · Consider whether this helps us work towards adoption of a best practice travel policy · Discuss how to achieve a sustainable approach to travel · Provide practical advice on how to influence travel behaviour By considering current behaviour, costs, profile (who travels, how often and why) and options for change we will be able to take a more collaborative, strategic and sustainable approach to travel procurement. The day will also include time for open discussions considering where we are now, the obstacles for change and the next steps we can all practically take to play our part.
Speakers
The background... Why JMP is a leading consultancy involved in the development of techniques to influence travel behaviour. Jonathan will provide a high level overview of the core principles and values of travel management, exploring the rise of the sustainability and climate change agenda, and how public and private sectors are reacting to carbon legislation and ‘voluntary’ reporting of their carbon accounts.
Better ways to work and communicate... The Sustainable Development Commission’s Smarter Moves report aims to show how information communication technology can promote sustainable mobility. Duncan will be explaining the Commission’s approach to transport and show how technology can play its part in cutting carbon, improving safety and saving money.
But, it’s about changing behaviour... Sustrans is a leading charity that has pioneered some of the most successful travel behaviour change work in the UK, significantly reducing car use. James will demonstrate how, by using the right evidence, approach, techniques and tools, you can achieve real and immediate shifts to more sustainable ways of travelling. You will gain an insight into what the evidence tells us about how people travel, and what works when it comes to enabling people to travel more sustainably.
There’s help at hand... The National Travel Category Strategy Team has been working hard to understand the issues around travel and have developed a number of tools, document templates and pan-government collaborative frameworks. The team is now concentrating on ‘demand management’ as the greenest mile is the mile not travelled.
Why attend?
